HOW WE MADE THE FAMILY

a workshop for actors, performers and theatre-makers

We told you we would do it but we have actually managed to set a date for our rescheduled summer workshops!

We are offering a 3-day workshop for actors to coincide with our new show THE FAMILY. This workshop will explore THEATREclub’s unique method of performance making, focusing on the space between fiction and reality.

Over three days, we will explore the various elements of creating work in the style we have developed throughout our productions, working only with what you bring and learning to trust how interesting that is.

Some of the work will include, looking at our unique style of improvisation, working with a game structure and allowing to trust the freedom to explore. Working this way adds to the actors process as relationships begin to develop within a group of actors that are grounded in trust and security, the building blocks of ensemble building. The workshops will be led by THEATREclub’s own Grace Dyas and Shane Byrne (cast member of THE FAMILY) and will be joined each day by a different memeber of the cast of THE FAMILY.

We’ve made an amazing epic 6 hour performance of a year. We made it for you to see it.

It's All Coming Together

This week in 365 words...

Last week we began to understand that these people who played our game - whom we had been listening to, reading about, and discussing over tables - were REAL. These people, who shared their thoughts, secrets and experiences with us, who have given us our entire script, who have helped us to create our most EXCITING, AMBITIOUS project yet, were all REAL PEOPLE. That thought is still mind blowing. That is still sinking in. And now we are starting to make even more realisations.
We are starting to notice the links, the repetition, the patterns that are emerging amongst the entries. These entries were anonymous, we understand and respect that. But we are only human.
If we have learned anything from this show above all else we have learned that we are ALL ONLY HUMAN. And that is why, despite ourselves, we are starting put the pieces together. We are watching the stories connect, intertwine and develop before our eyes.
We are starting to wonder if the person who was working so hard to learn Japanese, struggling with every adverb and adjective, was the same person who eventually landed a job in Tokyo.
We are wondering if the girl who was ignoring the boy that loved her was the same girl who realised she’d been in love with him all along.
We are hoping that the person who felt as though nothing would ever be good again was the same one who realised that sometimes everything turns out alright.
Should we be doing this? Should we be making these links? You’ll soon see for yourself; it’s impossible not to. It’s what makes this show fascinating; watching all those people who played the game trying, failing, learning, and developing throughout the year TWENTY TEN.
We are acutely aware of how precious each one of these personal developments is and we are honoured to have been bestowed with them. We are treating them with the utmost care, we promise you that. We will not jeopardise what we have been given here. We will not make assumptions.
But what we’re trying to say is that our minds have begun to wonder and wander, and soon yours will too.

Same Things. Same Time.

This week in 365 words...

It’s starting to hit us now. It really is. We are starting to understand that these are not just lines, not just words on pages, not imitations or recreations. These are REAL people who felt REAL things.
These are REAL people who we walk past in the street, who we eat lunch with, who sit opposite us on the bus. And they told us EVERYTHING.
They confided in us when they were sad, scared or lonely. They rushed home to tell us about their victories and their triumphs. They confessed their greatest fears, hopes, dreams and aspirations. They leaned on us for emotional support and they revelled in retelling us the joys of their day.
And now we are sitting in the rehearsal room listening to these inner most thoughts, to these sacred feelings, delighted whispers, quiet confessions and cautious murmurings - and we’re turning it all into theatre. Theatre that has us laughing and crying and taking deep breaths. Theatre that won’t leave our thoughts, that runs through our minds long after our heads hit the pillow.
WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. That’s how it makes us feel. We are all PEOPLE and we’ve all felt the SAME things at the SAME time. We have all been dragged through the mud at one stage. We have all picked ourselves up and dusted ourselves off, only to trip again.
We have all felt as though everything is unachievable, impossible and we have all had moments where suddenly we feel as though everything will be alright.
And now all of these feelings are being translated into art. We are taking the raw emotions, the raw experiences and we are performing them. For YOU. For EVERYONE and ANYONE who learned something in the year TWENTY TEN and for anyone who wants to learn MORE.
We need to listen to each other. We have more in common than you may think. We need to listen and to learn and MOVE FORWARD. Sometimes we are CONVINCING ourselves that we are lonely, that there is no one there to help us, that we are all fucked. It’s not true.
WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. Come and find out how.

WE'VE STARTED

Here at THEATREclub we have started rehearsals. We are running lines. Line after line after line. And we’re getting better.
We’ve also gotten very fond of recording things lately. YOU’VE shown us how affective it can be. We want to remember all of these things we’re learning and so we’re writing them down; just like you did for us.
Do you want to hear some?
We’ve learnt that “BUTT BREAKS” aren’t as exciting as they sound, that it’s never a good idea to get under the duvet whilst learning lines, that “statistics” can be a difficult word to say, that giving up drinking was the right thing to do, that working together makes a task less daunting and that we are all heading toward a totally new and unique experience.
That’s EXCITING isn’t it? And there’s more on its way. We want to keep you up to date so we’ve come up with a plan. Listen up; it works like this.
We’re going to tell you what we’ve learnt. First in TWENTY words. Then in TEN words. Then in a little picture.
Do you see what we’re doing here? Do you see the PATTERN?
Once a week we’ll sum it all up for you in THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE WORDS. Words from the actors and the interns, the makers and the observers.
And we’ll be out on the streets too. We’ll be asking YOU what YOU learned today. We’ll be asking YOU and your uncles and your girlfriends and your neighbours. We might even be giving out free bags if we like what you say. If we like how you play. Because it’s not too late to play, did you know that?
You can play on facebook, on twitter, on your blog, at the dinner table. Lets all tell each what we’ve learned. Lets all learn from each other.
Just don’t forget about “#TWENTYTEN” and “@THEATREclub” and all that. That’s important. That’s what could get you WINNING tickets. Can you imagine?

[oh my god a fox. a fox outside my window. wandering along, all chilled. long long legs and tail touching the ground. why is it that whenever i see a fox it feels like a magical event and my mouth falls open. big ears and white tip tail, lovely street-lamp brown. gone again. anyway.] i know i'm not the only one who suffers crowds to escape to sitting alone, witness to foxes. so where are they? the people like me. someone jokingly called me a lesbian tonight and i thought my face would erode with the effort of choosing an expression. the pain. i didn't frame any of this in the context of 'i have learned', sorry. so ok. i learned that ted hughes had a wife before sylvia plath who killed her daughter and then put her head in an oven too. dark.”

That’s a quote from THEATREclub’s new Project ‘Twenty Ten’. During 2010, we sent an email once a day and asked ‘What have you learned today?’. These peoples anonymous responses will form the the text for our serial epic ‘Twenty Ten’ where we aim to perfectly document the year. The text is full of news bites, sob stories, revelations,(that the moment in the doorway knocked all the breath out of me for a long time) tid bits, truths and learnt facts.
2010 was a huge year in our countries history, and we have a living breathing archive of the year on our hands.

We think it’s a good idea. Do you?

Or what about a show that tackles sex addiction and child abuse from the real perspective of the individual affected. And individual who happens to be one of the most innovative and exciting performers of our generation?

Or a show that aims to tell the stories of the Ryan report, stories that where buried for so long, through music, media and dance?

We live in a very different world than the one we watched 2009 slip into 2010 in. Things have changed. A lot has gone wrong. And we are reeling. Whether we know it or not.

It’s hard for any of us to know what to do. How can one person make a difference? What can you do if its just you?

As artists we have a duty to create a space where we as a society can reflect on what’s happened and hopefully then, we might know what to do next.

These are all good ideas. Ideas that are important and that need to happen. But ideas cost money. Projects so big, with such a big task, need a lot of people to make them happen.

(It costs 600 for a rehearsal room for four weeks.)

It’s hard for any of us to know what to do. How can one person make a difference? What can you do if its just you?

A new crowdfunding website Fund It.ie is the reason lots of these great ideas will be able to happen, and provides us as individuals to be able to make these huge scale ideas happen.

The website provides a platform where artists can tell us about their ideas and we can give small change or big cash and get great rewards.

After 100 days, its already raised over €144,831.

Before we had a highly trained english speaking young computer literate workforce in a country with a tiny corporation tax we had poems, plays, paintings and prose which travelled the world and let everyone know that this little Island good roar long before any tiger came along.

We have at our disposal the ability to create a new boom economy, an economy of ideas.

Neil Watkins and THISISPOPBABY’s electrifying (literaly, its first performance was cut short by a power cut!) will take place at ABSOLUT FRINGE this year.

that aim to document an entire year
at ABSOLUT FRINGE...

Hello You.
We need your help to spread the word...

On the first day of 2010, we sent out an open call for people to join our “2010 Game”. Over fifty people signed up online. They received an email asking them a simple question, “What have you learned today?” and we received their answers anonymously. We asked them this question every day for one year. Throughout the year, more and more people started playing. We now have over 4000 of these responses.

Back in April, we spent a week reading and talking about every single one.

We learned that we all felt the same things at the same time. We learned of the poetic and devastating nature of the responses and of the overwhelming sense of comfort provided by bearing witness to the unity and synchronicity of these anonymous writers. We want others to hear what was written.

With Twenty Ten; we are putting the epic year 2010 on the stage in its entirety, interrogating what we as a society have learnt from such a landmark year in our country’s history and we are questioning how our history should be written.

We do not see this as a normal show. It is not like plays we have made before or anything we have ever seen.

This serial epic will be presented as six episodes over six nights. Each episode will cover two months. On the last day there will be an omnibus edition of the entire text. This will all take place at ABSOLUT FRINGE.

Twenty Ten is our most ambitious project to date.

We can’t do it alone. This is a huge project and we need a big team. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Fundit.ie to raise much needed funds to pay for this huge project.

We’re offering amazing rewards- we’ll send you a motivational voicemail or a different twenty ten every day for a year... we’ll even go to you’re house and cook you dinner.

But most importantly, you can rest assured that we will spend your money well.

We firmly believe in theatre; It’s power to amaze, enchant, enlighten and to change. We see theatre as something that can start a discussion and maybe change the world around us a bit. And can still be entertaining and engaging.

JUNE WORKSHOP CLUB WITH THEATREclub

We are holding two workshops this june that are open to theatre practitioners of any kind!

SPARKLING WATER WORKSHOP
A day long journey into the minds and tricks and methods of THEATREclub.

Here at THEATREclub central we often find ourselves in a bit of a RUT ( LIKE creatively)
To WANGLE out of the rut we drink a lot of SPARKING WATER and stay up all night.
How do we find ourselves in this RUT I hear you say!

This usually happens after spending weeks AND WEEKS generating material
in a room somewhere in this city.

Generating work I hear you say, how might one do such a thing????
WELL we want to SHARE how we do it with YOU.

We are holding a day long SPARKLING WATER WORKSHOP that will explore some of the ways we work in a PRACTICAL WORKSHOP FORMAT that is open to theatre makers of any kind.

We made our way to Ballymun in Barry O’Connor’s car which has a lot of character may I add, with maps, kinder surprise toys and much more. We arrived in Ballymun safely.

High rise blocks, abandoned flats, grey sky, cold air and a feeling of helplessness.

We went into axis and had our dinner. Barry got what looked like a typical Sunday dinner. He was upset because his can of coke wasn’t cold but he soon got over it. Ger got chicken balls, chips and curry sauce.

“Fuck it, it’s Friday” I said. I got the pasta and Grace got what Barry got. We enjoyed the food.

During dinner, Barry and Ger were trying to kick me out of the show, saying they were getting another actress to do my job now. “You gave it a good shot, now give someone else a chance,” Barry said. I sat in silence whilst eating my pasta. Our location manager Rachael Keogh, then arrived. She was going to show us all the good places to make our viral. Niamh and Ruth then arrived. I don’t know Niamh’s title but she’s a lovely woman whom I had met before but didn’t remember. Barry and Ger then took the opportunity to make another deal out of that,

but I don’t mind because it’s Barry and Ger. We love each other.

Niamh showed us the space which was very exciting. The boys did some vocal exercises that they had learned in Trinity to make sure their projection was perfect for the coming weeks.

I didn’t go to Trinity so I opted out of that one.

Then, an amazing thing happened where Niamh showed us the green room and the dressing rooms and I found out that I get my own dressing room. I was so excited. The boys pretended they didn’t care but I knew they did.

We started the actual shoot after that, which was the most surreal thing I have ever done. We were recreating excerpts from the book “Dying to Survive”. The whole thing seemed so crazy because most of the events from the book actually happened in Ballymun.

It seems like nobody has anything to do, people are just standing around, waiting for something to happen.

There is no sense of urgency or people moving. Everyone is strolling, sitting
or standing around. When Ger was carrying me into the axis people were shouting things like “don’t let her fall, love” or “ you’re on candid camera; Smack her arse” When the boys were fighting, everyone loved it, people were standing around, predicting who was going to win.

I was overwhelmed by the whole thing.

We did a piece from the book at “The Towers”, a pub across the road from axis. I asked people going by if they had a lend of 20 pounds. Some people ignored me, some people just said they hadn’t got it to spare, but I was shocked by the amount of people who were willing to give me money. One woman said she could give me 10 euro and hoped that it would help me. We finished the shoot and the whole thing felt so real.

The high rise blocks were still there along with the abandoned flats, grey sky, cold air but I definitely felt less helpless.

HEROIN runs in axis Ballymun from the 24th to 26th March with a Matinee on Friday at 3pm.

We here at THEATREclub are full of love all year round. We love going to see plays and of course making up our own. Mostly this Valentine's we are filled with love for everything going on in Project Arts Centre as part of our festival The Theatre Machine Turns You On: Vol II. We LOVE that there is all sorts of upheaval and change popping up in this nation of ours. We LOVE feel the hope that there is somewhere in the future and we love to talk about how things are right now. Talking is one of our favourite things.

Also, we feel we should mention that We LOVE The Arts .

SIDE 1: DEMOTAPE – The Constant Experiment

Hello Mairin O'Grady from CARAVAN/ON/FIRE/COLLECTIVE. You are presenting your new play HAWK/HARE at THE THEATRE MACHINE TURNS YOU ON: Vol II next week. Tell us what you think of the MACHINE and of SIDE 1: DEMOTAPE...

I’m a writer this year in THE THEATRE MACHINE TURNS YOU ON VOL: II. For the first volume I was writer and director. And living in stress city. I feel like I’m liking the sounds of VOL: II more already. Even if it is still in progress. The Machine of Theatre has shrunken somehow into a more comfortable position for a small one like myself. Last year I was silly. And a year younger. In my work I felt I was throwing theatre from the void into the void. (This will always be the case in some ways – where does art come from/go to?) In VOL: II the void has disappeared. (I know yiz all now). And it’s no big scary mystery.

A year ago I felt I should DEFINE my work. That it was my job to make it clear what kind of work it is that Máirín O Grady and CARAVAN/ON/FIRE/COLLECTIVE make. So that everyone would then, and now, and in fifty years would be able to see clearly the direct pattern ALWAYS present in my work. I viewed my route of learning/progress as an improvement of the same themes rather than a mish mash and a discovery.

Now rather than pushing for definition I’m enjoying the freedom of constant experimentation. I want the making of my theatre to mimic theatre itself. Made of a million roles/characters/personas that I can step in and out of to figure out the ones that fit me best. I want the process to be more than a means to an end – I want it to help explore the landscape of the constant experimentation.

The DEMOTAPE slot is completely perfect for me in my life right now. It’s a showcase that’s teasing out the process as much as the finished product/production. Myself and Aoife Courtney (the director of Hawk/Hare) are not only working individually and collaboratively on making the best production, but we are also working out how we work together, and how we might work together in the future.

DEMOTAPE has given us a home to make an event. It is ONE NIGHT where it all either comes together or falls apart. And the audience only sees thirty minutes of all the hours we’ve pushed through together. The generosity of spirit in this ephemerality is it what astounds me about theatre. As we (the artists) are trying to break through into which role, and which method, and which madness, suits us best we’re breaking ourselves open for the audience to view in a tiny segment of time. The platform is ONE night with seventy people and if we’re lucky they’ll feel blessed they were one of them.

There are a million reasons that we can moan or smile about in relation to why we’re not all getting six week runs in The Abbey. One of the benefits though is not being saddled with the responsibilty of such concentration. (I mean like concentrated formula not on concentrating with your mind) A demotape is something new bands make before they sign any contract. We’re young and we’re learning and we can make and move one.

They have demands, they have plans and they have guns. They are making the sentence fit the crime. Scratcher is a farce about a farce that gets even more farcical by the day. On a rainy Tuesday morning in a non descript social welfare office, six twenty somethings step out from behind the statistics and bring the live registrar to life.

Devious Theatre were born in 2006 due to an overwhelming need to entertain. They spend their time rehearsing in kitchens and buildings they managed to get keys cut for. Their artistic credo is mostly ADHD based and fairly guerrilla. To this end, their goal is to kidnap as many young people away from gigs and cinemas and pubs and drag them to the theatre. They can bring their own cans if they want.

Okay so 'Queer Notions' - THISISPOPBABY's week of riotous fun and bold investigation is just around the corner, and with a jam packed programme to get stuck into- we thought we'd give you our two cents (cos that's all anyone has these days!) on our top picks from these glorious outsiders.

If you don't know who THISISPOPBABY are: here's what we told you about them the other day;

THISISPOPBABY- who are an amazing company run by Phillip McMahon and Jenny Jennings along with THEATREclub fave Lynnette Moran are having a festival in Project Arts Centre soon.

THISISPOPBABY are the people behind WERK at the Abbey Theatre and they run a tent at Electric Picnic so they've generally being putting their blood sweat and tears into making Dublin a better place to live for the last few years.

The Festival is called QUEER NOTIONS and last year when it was on THEATREclub had an amazing week going to see all the shows and having our eyes opened and our lives changed.

THEATREclub's very own Shane Daniel Byrne has a 'Queer Encounter' 'I got my hair cut a year ago' is a bit of a surprise- just turn up at around 6.55 on Thursday the 7th to find out! Okay we'll give you a little hint. He'll definitely be topless at some point. There's a Queer Encounter nearly every day of the festival at around 7 in and around Project Arts Centre. We're gonna hang around and make sure we catch them all.
The Year of Magical Wanking- Neil Watkins. Neil Watkins has been consisting inspiring and invigorating us from shocking our innocent minds with hit Fringe shows 'Dublin City Counselling' and 'The Dark Room' to facilitating regular euphoric nights out for us this year at WERK and Electric Picnic. We think Neil is one of the most important voices of this generation. We've got the inside scoop on this one cos we've read the script. And we can categorically tell you that this piece is gonna be very important. Featuring musings on spirituality and Ireland's relationship with sexual abuse, coupled with tales of wanking, hash and teenage skateboarders, this is one hour you won't forget in a while. We'll be there on both Friday and Saturday night.
Try and get tickets fast for Eddie Ladd's 'The Bobby Sands Memorial Race" which opens the festival on Tuesday 7th. Its only on for one night only and its gonna be special. A movement piece inspired by Bobby Sand's hunger strike- We heard about this piece a few months ago and its been stuck in our heads ever since.
As you might know, we've got a lot to say and we love to say it- so we're looking forward to the 'Queer Spiel' series of Talks this year. Especially, well actually ALL of them.
We're really excited about getting to see Peggy Shaw- who we've been hearing about and looking at on youtube for ages- in the flesh for the first time. On top of that she's performing a best of her body of work! Bonus.

On top of all this, we can't wait for Project to become the hub of lively discussion and FUN we witnessed it become last year- and to discovering new artists and ideas- and since they've all been tailor picked by the trusted tastes of THISISPOPBABY, we know we won't be disappointed. We need manpower to make this busy festival happen. Queer Notions is asking you

Back in December 2009, we initiated, curated and organised a festival of new work at Project Arts Centre. It was called THE THEATRE MACHINE TURNS YOU ON, and played ten shows to sold out houses and critical acclaim over five nights.

“Even the welcoming announcements at this mini-festival of new work had been culture jammed, subverted, served with a twist. “How yis?” asked an archly informal voice. “Ah, that’s good to hear.” Over five days, this announced 10 brisk productions from emerging artists curated by THEATREclub, an infuriatingly young company with only slightly less energy than the national power grid.”- Peter Crawley, Irish Times

THE THEATRE MACHINE TURNS YOU ON:

VOLUME II

We’re making this happen because- we want to provide a platform for artists to make work- we want to develop connections between artists who can support each other artistically and practically after the festival and to make those connections ourselves (we want new friends!)- we want to remove all the barriers between artists and making work- the things that sometimes make it hard to start, because we know what that’s like.

We’re looking for applications which are- to present full productions (though there may be some context where a work-in-progress makes sense... talk to us)- work of a contemporary sensibility- Ambitious. We think we can make most things happen. BUT - Practical. (some things cost money none of us have)

A place in the festival gets you- a chance to present your work in a technically outstanding venue with a huge public profile- a chance to develop relationships with other artists- a chance to have your work seen by the theatre community at large- a chance to develop an audience for your work and critical attention

- rehearsal space- technical support with access to a shared lighting designera shared production managera shared stage manager- festival marketing a whole team of people helping you sell your show- and the opportunity to learn about all of the above...- We will also pair artists with suitable mentors who have been successful in making the style of work that is the artist's ambition, if the artists needs this kind of support. Last years mentors included Phillip McMahon, Tom Creed and Gary Keegan and Feidlim Canon (Brokentalkers).

THEATREclub are back on the road and this time we are headed for Kilkenny Arts Festival

But don't worry it's not all naff and disgusting like these poor bastards. Group Therapy For One is a little more exciting than holding hands in a woodland.

Originally performed in Shane Byrne's family home as part of Absolut Fringe 2009, the show sold out, was forced to put on an extra showing and was nominated for Spirit of The Fringe Award.

This is a show about Shane. He's one of THEATREclub. And he has problems. He talks about them. Everyone else listens. He's the one. The audience is the Group and the Therapy... well we'll see.

(what a week)

Well. We had a great week last week. I mean we really enjoyed ourselves.THEATREclub stole your CLOCK RADIO what the FUCK you gonna do about it? went off like an effing tri-umph. Thus, we feel triumphant. Loads of people came to see it. Loads of people loved it. Some people didn't like it but like, I mean, we're open to that.

We just wanted to say a big massive thanks to everybody who came to the show, everybody who posted a video on facebook, every body who gave us a CLOCK RADIO and everyone who helped make the show happen. We love so many people. Not just like them. We love them.

So that was the show!

Then mere hours after leaving the stage and bowing to an audience on their feet, we high-tailed it over to WERK where we performed and partied, danced and drank and generally entered new depths of depravity. It was amazeballs. Basically if you missed it then you've a lot to catch up on. CHECK IT OUT HERE

THEATREclub are joining the masses in the dole queue.

We're borrowing and worrying.

We're thinking about leaving.

We're trying to stay.

Just when we got to an age where we could start making something of

ourselves, the whole country crashed down around us.

THEATREclub stole your CLOCK RADIO what the FUCK you gonna do about it?

is a glance at how it feels to be young inside a nation in a state of collapse; looking out to a future you know nothing about.

We first presented this show as part of the festival we ran in Project Arts

Centre last December 'THE THEATRE MACHINE TURNS YOU ON'. It sold out, and

Peter Crawley said:

"A blissful tussle between structure and chaos (structure lost),

formlessness may have been the point of Doireann Coady and Grace

Dyas’s ferocious show."

What the fuck are we gonna do about it?

What will we do about the end of eras? What will we do about the banks? What

will we do about the cans of tuborg and the spit on the carpet?

What happens when it stops unravelling, after all the scandal and recession and protest, what is left for us, after everything we grew up with is proved false?

THEATREclub don't have the answers. But we think it helps to ask the

questions.

Or maybe we'll just dance around, when we should be talking about something important.

In the face of this crisis, we started this company and we have not stopped since. We've been doing well, scooping awards and packing out theatre's all over the city. We've been trying to make the theatre a place for everyone.

We've been keeping our tickets cheaper than the cinema and persuading everyone from our taxi-drivers to our best mates that they should come to see our shows. We think the theatre is really important. We think the theatre is the place where we can talk about whats happening around us right now. THEATREclub stole your CLOCK RADIO what the FUCK you gonna do about it? is our most urgent show to date.

It is real scary to do speed dating

you have to know that first.

Very scary.

Even if its only Live Art.
Especially cos its Live Art.

Grace did the soundcheck with Gary from the bed at 10am. (filthy)

Roxanna arrived and we went for Bricfeasta.

Then we started speed dating.

It was terrifying.

Roxanna asked a Japanese woman for help. She said Help me. The Japanese woman was very scared of Roxanna. Then we hung on her because it was so overwhelming.

The lads gave out a little bit.

Roxanna apoligised to Gary and said it would never happen again.

A Japanese Man arrived on screen and hummed alot. It was very funny when he started to repeat the lines. (imagine a Japanese person saying "I need help, I need love, I need to feel good") Roxanna was very professional and didn't corpse once.

Then we set Cillian Dyas (aged 9months) up for his live art debut. (Basically we put him in front of the computer on his high chair)

The dater, Moss from New Zealand arrived and saw what appeared to be an unsupervised baby hanging out on Skype at the other end of the world.

"You're a baby. We're on Skype!"

Says Moss.

Then he sang My Girl down the skype lines to Cillian, we hope theres a really dramatic exciting reason for why he decided to do that in that moment. Then Sean Dyas stopped the situation. Cillian had to go for a walk.

Another Japanese young woman was our next date. She was good she repeated all the lines back and ended the date by telling Roxanna she was really beautiful. (we think so too)

Then we had a Norwegian woman (we're not sure what she was really) who told Roxanna

"Start with the little things. Have a cup of tea or coffee"

Then the Irish woman who we don't know but who is clearly from Dublin and happens to be at Live Art Speed Date Tokyo. Roxanna told her she needed help. She said she also needed sun. She told us we all need help sometimes, and she told Roxanna to call a friend.

Then we had a man from Liverpool, which Roxanna verified is in England.

Then in a bizarre turn of events. A Japanese baby came and BROKE THE COMPUTER.

Then a girl and a man came. The girl had lovely hair. We couldn't hear them. So they got Greg for us.

But then Greg came and saved us from the Japanese child.

THEN THE JAPANESE CHILD CAME BACK.

He was up very late. He was only one years old. We didn't really know what to do as ROUGH isn't really suitable for small little children. So Roxanna sang Katy Perry's "Hot and Cold" to him.

That was the end of the Live Art Speed Date.

Gary came in with his shirt off and he looked real sexy.

Then we started to blog.

We liked that the people were so far away and they're all Roxannas mates now which means she can go for Tea in Japan.

We learnt about Paradise from the man from Liverpool.

"Paradise is where kisses last forever and children dance"

So thats nice.

In and up and out and about

There's no taxi's in the world at 8am. Shane Byrne anxiously stands on Patrick St. Grace puts on the tracksuit again. Emma and Doireann buy bra's and leggings. Ger is making his way to the Theatre.

Ger and Dylan hang lamps. Grace and Shane drink tea and make plans.

Grace stands on the stage and says all the lines.

We all get confused about leaving the desk out.

Plans are ripped up and thrown around and ripped up again.

Emma talks on the radio about vintage and THEATREclub.

Aoibhinn and Roxanna oooh and aaahhh over the set.

Doireann and Emma arrive and cigarettes are smoked.

We finish the tech and talk about the door.

Ger has a sandwich and we run the show.

Derek, from D9 Taxi's whose giving us a lift to RTE, calls and says he's outside. Finally a solution about the desk fades in, and Grace and Doireann start doing make-up and shouting in the taxi.

Phillip prints the programme, the lads have a lunch.

Doireann and Grace meet Dylan Haskins at RTE. He looks lovely. IN WORK.

The lads back in the Axis run the show again. Its lovely. Everyone has dinner, Shane and Emma set up the Seymours Vintage auction...

Doireann and Grace go live on RTE's twotube. There are many terrifying moments. Many.

We arrive back at the theatre with chicken burgers and wallet disasters. To find that... everythings fine.

We start to get excited.

Grace gives notes to the girls and Ger tells reminds them about standing in the lights.

Aoibhinn takes photos of Roxanna and Roxanna takes photos of Aoibhinn.

We stand outside the theatre and smoke cigarettes.

We watch our friends arrive to support us.

We meet the young people of Ballymun again. They've all come to see the show after doing workshops with Grace and Shane. We're nervous about them liking it, and so are they.

We talk through things and squeeze arms.

Shane tells the audience that we're really happy to have them there.

Please switch off your mobile phones.

This is as simple as a story about trying.

We watch the show unfold and happen again and better and epic all over again.

The girls take a bow and Ray introduces us and asks Doireann what her name is again? (a reference to yesterdays accidental rude incident)

Dylan Haskins starts the post-show discussion.

We talk about expressing yourself or delivering a message.

We talk about repetition and changing clothes.

We talk about identifying and making theatre.

We talk about dreaming up a set design out of your head.

We talk about asking for help and Derek the taxi man.

We talk about stories for Boys and stories for Girls.

We talk about workshops in Ballymun and rehearsing in wine shops.

We talk about the country falling apart and The Carpet Mills on Thomas St.

We answer questions about the auction and tell everyone whats next.

We clap and wrap up.

The girls from the workshops run onto the stage.

They stand in the frames and scream I need help.

The sit on the swing and mess with the dresses.

They ask can they be in THEATREclub.

Then in the foyer, they join a youth theatre.

Drinks are had and people talk about trying, and Sarah Kane, and eating crisps in a theatre.

Grace and Roxanna and Aoibhinn talk about how different it felt this time, and how it nearly made them cry.

The call is set at five and we all go home to send emails and write blogs and sleep (maybe) so we can do it all again tomorrow.

Everybody started ringing everybody else to check if we were all awake. We were... How could we be asleep at a time like this? I mean c'mon...

11.00 am

THEATREclub met at the Carpet Shop. Some woman had bought the carpet we had picked out so Jimmy, (the carpet man- with whom we have a blossoming friendship), gave us a lovely other piece.

Fran The Van Man sits at home drinking a cup of tea.

11.15 am

THEATREclub stand anxiously outside the prearranged meeting point awaiting the arrival of Fran The Van Man.

11.17 am

Fran The Van Man arrives and we stop the traffic on Meath Street and somehow manage to fit the carpet into the van. To our horror we realise that there is only two seats Fran The Van Man's van. With her guile and quick thinking Doireann Coady leapt into the back of the van. Shane and Grace called her from the front a few minutes later. She told them...

"I'm in fucking pitch darkenss and I'm just rolling around the floor!"

Other memorable quotes included...

"I'm just in a really dark place right now."

12.00 pm

We arrive in Ballymun greeted by Emma and Ger who both look great. The theatre is getting ready already. Eddie.

Grace and Shane joined the mop club, a club which encourags and empowers young people to mop stages in suburban Arts Venues.

The giant ladder got painted white, then pink.

Also the set was made. Basically we hung things out of the ceiling.

Glen and the girls at the cafe made us all lovely lunch.

So that was nice.

2.00 pm

Maria Schweppe of DYT phoned to ask things and then wished us luck. Aw...

We did more hanging of things.

Veronica Dyas visited us. Niamh also visited us. They're both lovely.

3.00 pm

Shane and Grace went to the YouthBank to give them a workshop. It was the best workshop of all workshops and the young people learned loads and had a great time.

We taught them some devising skills. They taught us that even the good kids are messers in school, that regeneration erases the good and the bad and that some people think Ballymun is a place to go and jump.

Note: This blog is being written by Shane and Grace so other things happened in the last 2 hours but we weren't here. So we can't talk about them cos we don't know. I mean you have to blog from your own perspective... it's just not our story....

As a group everyone talked about the washing line.

Shane got in trouble for being bold.

Cigarettes were smoked, laughs were had blah blah blah ljsbvkb

Dinner. Chipper. Disgusting.

Also for some reason Doireann was really rude to Ray Yeates by mistake. It just happened like, I mean it's grand. Shit like that goes down at a Get In. (GET IN)

The measuring tape is placed on the wall.

Ger focuses the lights. He and Grace discuss it. It's grand is phrase uttered several thousand times in this brief exchange. I mean... we're going as fast as we can.

Shane and Grace start to blog.

We now have realised that the manicness, depression, tiredness, or giddiness are in the ether. Any one of these could ruin the rest of the Get In, (GET IN) which is fast becoming the dry tech, a phrase that Shane finds hilarious.

What got you interested in theatre?
What got me really interested in the theatre as opposed to any other form of acting I suppose was the training I got and the inspirational way some of my teachers would speak about it and then realising myself that the beauty of it was in the doing of it.

Why theatre and not film or TV?
I think theatre, and of course any live form of entertainment has something very special about it. You don't have that same connection between the audience and the actors with film or tv and you don't have that potential for something spontaneous and new to happen every night. Emotion can often be forced on you with camera shots and music but in theatre you see the actors in their raw state be it good or bad and I think there is something great about that.

What do you do before you go onstage?
Before I go on stage I do a warm up, shake around the place for awhile and try keep the nerves at bay! Then(and this is probably the most unprofessional thing ever!), I find a place where I can watch and see who is in the audience because I love to know before I go on! I then have a quick word with my nana wherever she is and bless myself.

What's the best thing you've seen in the last year?
I've seen a LOT of great theatre all year. A few that really stick out for me would have to be 'The Last Day's of Judas Iscariot' directed by Matt Torney, 'Basin' directed by Louise Lowe, 'This is our Youth' directed by Jimmy Fay and I loved 'Terminus' and 'Little Gem' in the Peacock too. There were loads of others though!

What do you like about working on ROUGH?
I suppose first and foremost working with a company and team that are so ambitious, so driven, so vibrant, fresh and believe so much in the work they do. Also, being in a rehearsal room and on stage with someone you trust 100% is something that I'm very lucky to have with Roxanna. Then with every show you do you learn something new about yourself and without sounding too cringey this was more the case with ROUGH than any show I've ever done. There is something very unique about it.

Why do you think people can identify with ROUGH?
I think people can identify with ROUGH because of it's pure truth and honesty. I think that when we are not talking about you in certain points in the show (and more often than not we probably will be) we are talking about your friend, your sister, your daughter or someone you know. We might just be talking about that girl you saw the other night and felt sorry for or the girl you brought back to your place but it has a familiarity that resonates with all of us.

ROUGH is epic that sounds like blaring dance music, tastes like cigarettes, feels like cold concrete under bare feet and see's Dublin with dirty filthy eyes.

THEATREclub are raging that alot of young people think the theatre is boring. So we're shipping out to Ballymun, taking our award winning show ROUGH to Axis. We want to meet new audiences. We want other people our age to see our work. We're setting up camp and staying there until we get them in the theatre.

It's challenge BALLYMUN.

We're doing free workshops in schools and youth groups. We're walking the streets and talking to people. We're making the tickets only five euros. That means that its the cheapest night out in Dublin. Its cheaper than the cinema. Its cheaper than a PINT. We've got the manic ambition all over our faces and we won't stop until its done.

ROUGH is a show about young life in Dublin. It was first performed at ABSOLUT FRINGE 2009, where it won the FISHAMBLE NEW WRITING AWARD and was nominated for SPIRIT OF THE FRINGE.

Its about casual sex, binge drinking and trying. It's written by Grace Dyas, performed by rising stars Aoibhin Garrihy and Roxanna Nic Liam. The costumes are by Emma Fraser, from her line of affordable vintage fashions Seymour's Vintage. After the show each night there'll be a silent auction where you can buy the dresses from the show for the highest bid.
